National Estates Churches Network Conference .. in the North

This year's NECN conference will consider the various current takes on mission, check out how each approach can be undertaken sensitively or insensitively, discuss why we might need to be concerned about that, and share many stories and programmes which are attempting to do it right.

at 10:00–15:30

Church of the Epiphany, Beech Lane, Gipton, Leeds, LS9 6SW

Many s
peakers and practitioners will share their ideas, concerns and challenges so that we hope to come away with fresh insight and lots of new ideas to try.

As always, this conference is for lay people as well as ministers, all denominations and those who work in other Christian groupings. We keep the cost down (still only £20 for the day including lunch and hot drinks) and offer essentially the same one day programme in two venues – one north and one south – to help your travel expense.

Come along, bring some friends, meet old friends and new, and learn how to be a housing estate Christian with pride, and without prejudice.

What the DWP didn't want you to know.

Church Action on Poverty uncovers new Government research which reveals millions of pensioners and working age families losing out as more than £10 billion in benefits go unclaimed. The Department for Work and Pensions research report, published without comment in June, reveals shocking figures for the numbers of people missing out on pensions and other social security they are entitled to. SLEAP ... can you help homeless young people

SLEAP is a local Lancashire charity that works alongside homeless young people, seeking to provide housing and support. We are currently looking for families or individuals with a spare room who have a desire to help young people in need. A full interview and risk assessment is undertaken before considering placing a young person in a family home and the householders are very well remunerated and offered regular support and guidance.

If you are interested in becoming a SLEAP householder then please contact us for further details on 01772 623603 or email us at colin@sleap.co.uk.

An opportunity for Food Poverty Projects to apply for a number of slow cookers

Apologies for multiple postings of this... It is mainly directed to projects within the Feeding Lancashire Together network.. but is open for all groups addressing food poverty issues within the Lancashire County Council area

As part of the Feeding Lancashire Together Project, Together Lancashire was awarded funding to pilot approaches to using slow cookers; increasingly, we have noticed that foodbanks and other food poverty response organisations are exploring how they can teach clients how to cook on a budget. TL wishes to explore the development of models using slow cooking methods (recognising low fuel usage) to enable best practice to be developed amongst different client groups.

Target groups will potentially be families and children, possibly working through children, youth and family support organisations; older people, potentially working through over 50's groups etc. This is not by any means an exclusive list, and applications are welcomed from organisations with other clients. Developing links to those organisations with access to fresh/nutritious food is encouraged, eg Fareshare, allotment associations, community farms.

Organisations may apply for up to six cookers (for a really special project!), but it is anticipated that the norm will be 1-2. In addition, if organisations require other equipment such as soup/stick blenders, these may also be provided, subject to funds. Funds are not unlimited, and therefore we are working on a first come first served basis, with a target cut off date of 18 September 2015.

Training to participants can be provided or potentially funded if required, eg for food hygiene.

The main conditions attached to the donation of cookers are that a case study must be provided, and that wherever possible, recipes should be shared. We want to know what works, what appeals to different target groups, and how can the project be developed.

The full Programme Criteria are available on request, together with an application form. Please do forward this to colleagues who you think may be interested.

Consultations launched into voluntary sector role in health and care

Two consultations published today will help to determine the future of voluntary sector involvement in health and care (7 August 2015).

As part of the Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise (VCSE) review, respondents from the voluntary and health and social care sectors will give their views on the current state of partnership working, and how closer collaboration could be fostered.

The second consultation will also seek views on the role and effectiveness of the government's current 'voluntary sector investment partnership' suite of grants.

Commissioned by the Department of Health, NHS England, and Public Health England, the VCSE review is overseen by its advisory group of representatives including those from the voluntary sector.

Both consultations will remain open until  Friday 6 November  and are available to complete below:

The group will report early next year.

NHS England Chief Executive, Simon Stevens, said : "I think it is essential that NHS England is working with the Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise sectors in co-producing the future of our NHS.  We are working closely with VCSE organisations in the future direction for cancer, mental health, learning disability and other services.

"The health service needs to think beyond the narrowly drawn notion of the national health service itself because we are, and always have been, heavily dependent on the support of the VCSE sector – 3 million volunteers and 5.5 million carers, 1.4 million of whom are full-time doing more than 50 hours a week unpaid as carers.

"The work of VCSE organisations is often not highly visible but makes a huge impact on the lives of millions, often reaching people that do not typically access NHS services and experience the greatest health inequalities.   The sector provides benefits not only for the residents of a local CCG but also for the good functioning of the local health service.  If we want to get serious about demand moderation and the rate of growth of services, we should not forget about the good work that is being done, and in fact more that can be done, by those other parts of the local community.  I am therefore really pleased that this Review is looking at how we can improve partnerships with the VCSE sector."

Opens: 7 August 2015

Closes: 6 November 2015

National Estates Churches Network NECN conference 2015 information

Again this year there is both a London and a Northern (Leeds) version of this event.

** Sense and Sensitivity: Taking Care with Estate Mission

Whatever our style of mission, there can always be the tendency to offer others what we ourselves think the faith should look and feel like. But what if God wants to offer something different that suits each culture and subculture? So how do we mission with Sense and Sensitivity? How do we Take care with Estate Mission? Just how do we learn what God is already doing in the Housing Estates and get alongside him in it?

This year's NECN conference will consider the various current takes on mission, check out how each approach can be undertaken sensitively or insensitively, discuss why we might need to be concerned about that, and share many stories and programmes which are attempting to do it right.

Many speakers and practitioners will share their ideas, concerns and challenges so that we hope to come away with fresh insight and lots of new ideas to try.

Launch of new campaign video and petition to STOP child sexual abuse

Sexual abuse in the UK can be stopped – we need a united voice from the public to demand the necessary change.

Please watch this new short campaign video ("The Invisible Child"), and sign the associated petition.... :

http://achildiscrying.org.uk/

Transformation Powerhouse, supporting adult survivors of child sexual abuse, want to use all the experience they have gained from working with individuals over the past 13 years to campaign for permanent change to stop child sexual abuse, as it can be done through a structured concerted strategy of "Provision, Prosecution and Prevention".

They really would like to see the church get behind this, which would give a huge impetus and a great testimony to the church taking on a deep and relevant spiritual and social issue in a positive way.

If you can assist in any way to encourage people to watch and sign, they would be grateful.  They are also keen to recruit local "ambassadors" who may want to promote this in their churches or neighbourhoods, and Transformation will give them all the campaign materials required.  More details from info@transformation.gs

Best wishes,
