Methodist Action (North West) Ltd is an award-winning charity. We are currently recruiting to the post of Support Worker at our supported accommodation project, Fox Street Community, Preston.

Job summary

This position requires a proactive and driven individual to work as a member of a passionate team within a forward thinking and progressive charity. The role requires the successful candidate to: consistently deliver effective support and risk management; demonstrate an empathetic approach; work effectively within the Fox Street team and with partner agencies; efficiently contribute to the charity's work; empower service users to gain independence and fulfilment.

Key tasks will include: conduct initial assessments; record keeping and risk management; help in managing occupancy levels and minimising voids; support service users in money management; collection and distribution of donations; lone working as necessary; work with external agencies; food preparation and cleaning if necessary; attend meetings; observe confidentiality; signpost service users to other services; support service users to achieve positive outcomes and move-on; encourage service users to be involved in activities; take part in training; comply with the charity's policies and procedures.

Salary: £14,866.05 per annum

Benefits include:

• 28 days holiday plus Bank Holidays

• 3% employers contribution to pension

• Permanent contract

• Annual pay review

Working hours: 37 hours, shifts on rota, Monday - Sunday

We now have two more date available for 2016.   The dates for the two day courses are February 18th & 19th 2016 & April 7th & 8th 2016 Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) is for everyone 16 or older—regardless of prior experience—who wants to be able to provide suicide first aid. Shown by major studies to significantly reduce suicidality, the ASIST model teaches effective intervention skills while helping to build suicide prevention networks in the community.   Virtually anyone age 16 or older, regardless of prior experience or training, can become an ASIST-trained caregiver. Developed in 1983 and regularly updated to reflect improvements in knowledge and practice, ASIST is the world's leading suicide intervention workshop. During the two-day interactive session, participants learn to intervene and help prevent the immediate risk of suicide. Approved by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and recommended in the National Suicide Strategy, ASIST is a standardised, certified programme teaching a robust model of suicide intervention with 6 easy-to-remember steps. ASIST supports the National Service Framework (NSF) Standard 7, which looks at suicide prevention.   ASIST allows the safe exploration of attitudes and experiences, considers various myths about suicide, builds relationships within teams, addresses needs of different client groups and access provides a shared model of suicide intervention.   Training outcomes include: the identification of people having thoughts of suicide, reach an understanding of the reasons for a person's suicidal thoughts and their reasons for wanting to live, review immediate risk and develop a plan to increase safety, follow up on all safety commitments and access further help as required.     ASIST is suitable for everyone including community members, mental health professionals, nurses, managers, teachers, counsellors, youth workers, emergency service personnel, prison officers, armed forces and faith leaders.
