Funding for Financial Literacy Projects - deadline 1 May 2013

The MSE Charity has announced that its grants programme will re-open for applications on the 1st May 2013.  The MSE Charity provides grants to constituted community based groups (including schools) to help fight financial and consumer illiteracy and to educate and inform adults and children about consumer and debt issues.  Under the programme, grants of up to £5,000 are available for group projects such as self-help groups, schools, workshops and other innovative schemes that seek to educate people about money, debt and consumer issues.  The programme usually closes when 40 applications have been received.  Individuals over the age of 18 can apply for a grant of up to £500 to help pay towards a recognised and approved course that will help improve their ability to budget and manage their finances. The grant can be used to pay for financial education course fees and other associated expenses.

 I want to pose David's question to our politicians in regard to the way poverty and homelessness is being defined in the UK. Unless one is registered - that is, goes through a not uncomplicated referral system - the State, through its delegated authority to the local municipalities, does not recognise one's need for shelter, for food, or for social benefits, in that people who have not gone "through the system" are denied help.

I am delighted that the core group of Jesus in the City 2013 have now got the fragments together to offer you a amazing long weekend from Friday 6^th – Sunday 8^th September for the next Urban Mission Congress, Manchester.  For bookings and more information go to www.jitc2013.co.uk

 

Our theme 'Making sense of the fragments' recognises that though we are now in a global village, with instant communication at a click of a button, the reality of living in challenging urban areas is increasingly fragmented.  Ministry, churches and the people of God could be working just round the corner from your ministry and you don't know about it.  Resources and answers to our prayers for help can be sometimes in the next street.  There is a growing difference in wealth, health and life-chances as people share the same city but live very separate lives amidst huge social, ethnic and religious diversity.  Take it from one who lives in an area that has been predominantly portrayed in the BBC3 programme 'People Like Us' (Wednesdays 9.00pm or catch up on BBC iplayer).  The question remains - where are the people of God in this fragmented picture?  What part can the Church play in bringing the fragments together and creating a new Kingdom-inspired picture image, instead of the one that is often portrayed of our inner city and urban areas.  

 

Making Sense of the Fragments will be an opportunity to come together with others to share experiences, reflect together, celebrate each other's stories, and be inspired to action.  It is an event for all who are active in urban ministry and mission and for all those who care about our fragmented towns and cities.

 

Speakers and guests confirmed so far include Dr Tony Campolo, Andy Flannagan, Stuart Murray-Williams, Les Isaac, Marike Hoek and John Haynes.  The programme will include:  'Question Time' event with a panel including GM Police and Crime Commissioner Tony Lloyd, Chief Constable Peter Fahy, founder of Street Pastors Les Isaac and Niall Cooper of Church Action on Poverty.  Campolo and Curry.  World Café sessions.  Site visits and much more.
