Endurance inspired by hope: why churches remain at the heart of tackling poverty

Great Blog post here

A while ago an atheist friend of mine who also works with homeless people said to me: 'My motives are purer than yours.  I do this work simply to help people, you do it so you can get into heaven.'

Good News for Streetlife Project and Vulnerable young people in Blackpool

Great news for Streetlife, we have been awarded four years funding from the Big Lottery Reaching Communities. We will receive a total of £436,814 over four years.

This is fabulous news for Streetlife and will go a long way to sustaining the future of our work. This money will specifically fund exisiting work i.e. our Shelter team leader, Lifeskills worker, training residentials for young people and will also provide us with a new opportunity to employ a part-time counsellor and train volunteers in Level 2 Counselling.

We are all thrilled that Streetlife will be able to continue to provide vital support to vulnerable young people aged 16-25. Streetlife provides emergency and on-going support to young people who often have no-one else to turn to. This funding will help us to ensure they have access to a safe space and the support to develop their skills, address any issues and ultimately live a positive, independent life.

If anyone is interested in volunteering at Streetlife please contact tony.riley@wearestreetlife.org.

In order to  collate the information we have devised a short questionnaire. This should be filled in for each social action project linked to your church. You may wish to ask a leader from each group to do this .

There are 3 ways of doing this please choose which is most convenient for you or your group leader.

http://www.surveymonkey.com/r/mappingfaithprojectsinBlackpool

2) one of our team of volunteers can work with you on a face to face interview basis.. or by phone

3) you can fill in a paper version, by printing out the attached file and returning it to us.

With your co-operation,  we will create a network of helpful mutuality, sharing encouragement, and possible access to funding sources. We also aim to produce a ready source of information so that people in need can access help either directly, or through your signposting.

Weekly publications and blogs: w/b 2nd March to 11th March 2015

Publication: The cost of the cuts: the impact on local government and poorer communities

How are austerity measures affecting local government and communities?

Cuts to local authority budgets are having a profound effect on the services people receive. The poorest communities and residents are being hardest hit and those least able to cope with service withdrawal are bearing the brunt.

Find out more about today's new publication here.

Publication: Redistribution of social and societal risk

UK austerity measures impact more acutely on disadvantaged groups and communities. Cuts to public services and complex ongoing changes to welfare provision are making daily existence in some communities increasingly challenging. These changes intensify existing societal problems by redistributing risk from state to individuals and communities.

Publication: Could a 'citizen's income' work?

Calls for a citizen's income have raised the prospect of a simpler method for ensuring everyone has enough to live on. However, its introduction would require changes in how society views the role of the state in redistributing income.

Blog: The debate on citizen's income needs to go wider

Introducing a citizen's income would need society to change; we need a wider debate about the modern welfare state, says Chris Goulden.

Blog: Reducing tuition fees sounds progresive - but is it a bad use of £3 billion?

There are better ways of using £3 billion for the benefit of disadvantaged young people than cutting university tuition fees, says Helen Barnard.

Event: What are the most significant poverty trends in Scotland today?

Thursday, March 26, 2015   Edinburgh

14:30 hrs - 16:30 hrs

JRF are launching the seventh report into poverty and social exclusion in Scotland.

Cross party interest in the fight against poverty in Scotland has arguably never been as high as it is currently. Against this backdrop of concentrated policy attention, the research, carried out by the New Policy Institute, will describe some of the most significant changes over the last decade, and highlight the main challenges ahead.

Following presentations from the report's authors, representatives from several different sectors will provide a response and there will be a chance for discussion with the audience.

Speakers include: Dame Sue Bruce, Chief Executive, City of Edinburgh Council, Peter Kelly, Director, The Poverty Alliance, Dr Peter Kenway, Director, New Policy Institute, Sandy MacDonald, Head of Sustainability, Standard Life and Georgina Sheilds, Commissioner, Poverty Truth Commission.

If you would like to register an interest in this event, please contact Michelle on email michelle.atkins@jrf.org.uk to discuss how you can book a place.
