"Serious about Transformation"

November 2014

Welcome!

"Hello & welcome" to the November edition of "Serious about Transformation". Well, there's a definite chill in the air now as we prepare to move from Autumn to Winter in the coming weeks, although bright sunshine is still streaming in through my window as I write this introduction.

With Harvest now behind us, we turn our attention to the season of Advent; the time of year that is filled with the anticipation of celebrating Christ's birth...a time of immense joy, but also a time of great sadness for those who may be experiencing difficult & challenging circumstances - perhaps experiencing loneliness & isolation, homelessness, financial worries. It is at times like these that Christians are called to reach out...to welcome the lost & the lonely, to be a friend to the friendless, to love the unloved.

In this month's edition you can find out more about the "Catalyst Programme", with our new video presentation, read about the Jubilee+ book launch - "The Myth of the Undeserving Poor" - and discover #Giving Tuesday...not to mention a number of employment vacancies & an exciting training opportunity (but you'll need to hurry as it's being held on 8th November!).

'Catalyst Programme' - Passionate about Transforming Lives.

Thriving individuals and flourishing communities are at the heart of Tearfund's UK work. The IMPACT UK Team has a vision to see Christians, across the UK, fully engaged and equipped to bring wholeness and flourishing in place of poverty, disadvantage, inequality & brokenness.

The "Catalyst Programme" is a process that helps the local church to realise its mission & vision for the local community; developing, producing & implementing relevant and sustainable social action programmes at the end.

We've produced a short video about the programme & how you can get involved...our current grant programme is still open for sign-ups, so why not see if it could be right for you...just click the picture.

'The Myth of the Undeserving Poor'

'The Myth of the Undeserving Poor' is the first book by Jubilee+, a Christian organisation that equips churches across Britain to make a positive difference in their local communities, especially serving those in need.

Launching 'The Myth of the Undeserving Poor' by Martin Charlesworth and Natalie Williams of Jubilee+ at Westminster Central Hall on 22nd October 2014, Lord David Alton of Liverpool said: "The authors of the The Myth of the Undeserving Poor book, Martin Charlesworth and Natalie Williams, have written boldly and passionately... They have analysed the emerging media narratives. They have looked again at the history of tackling poverty in the UK. They have analysed both the theology and the practice of the current upsurge of church-based social action. Most searchingly of all, they have challenged the 'myth of the undeserving poor'. They argue, rather, that both church and society respond best to poverty when we do not allow ourselves to be imprisoned by dubious and highly subjective moral judgements concerning the poorest in our society. I commend this publication to help challenge the thinking of not only people of faith but also the media and policy-makers."

#Giving Tuesday...Global Day of Giving

On 2nd December, the UK will celebrate #GivingTuesday, the global day of giving that asks everyone to show the world why it's good to give. Whether it's making a donation, volunteering time or just spreading the word, it is a call to action for everyone who wants to give something back.

The campaign started in the United States in 2012 and now spans five continents. It follows 'Black Friday' and 'Cyber Monday', two days that are famous for spikes in high-street and online spending and encourages a shift to giving. The UK campaign is being led by the Charities Aid Foundation.

The choice of what to do on the day is truly yours, although as a helping hand, the campaign website - www.givingtuesday.org.uk - provides lots of ideas as to how you could consider lending your support.
